SEG Beijing Section Update
(under GAC news in TLE)
There is a wonderful spirit of cooperation between the Society of Exploration Geophysicists and the Chinese geophysicists since 1978 when a small delegation attended the Annual SEG Meeting in San Francisco, California. Thereafter, both organizations had collaborated on 12 different kinds of technical exchanges. Among them, there were five successful comprehensive conferences and expositions. In the past two decades, the SEG Beijing Section played key roles as a facilitator in exchange programs between the SEG and SPG.
The Beijing Section has experienced significant membership growth. The increasing membership resulted from our ability to offer career-oriented programs that are informative, such as continuing education, lecture series, hosting visiting professors and distinguished geophysicists, etc. The local membership is currently 800+. In China, there are 15 student sections, including one in Taiwan.
In the future, SEG and SPG will do what we always enjoy doing to enhance our relationship and to build extensive collaboration with the outside geophysical communities. According to the agreement of technical cooperation signed by SPG and SEG, a smaller-scale geophysical conference will jointly be held by SPG and SEG every two years, and a larger-scale international geophysical conference and exposition will be jointly held every four years.
In 2005, we held a couple of technical training courses. The first course was held from May 23 to 26 and titled “Seismic Anisotropy: Basic Theory and Applications in Exploration and Reservoir Characterization”, and the instructors were Dr. Ilya Tsvankin and Mr. Vladimir Grechka. Sixty professionals attended the course. In addition, we also held a DISC course, titled “Insights and Methods for 4D Reservoir Monitoring and Characterization”, which was presented by Dr. Rodney Calvert on August 16 to 17. Nearly fifty geoscientists and petroleum engineers attended this excellent course subject.
The SPG and SEG made a decision to hold a technical seminar on October 27th –29th, 2006, in Kunming City, China. The theme is “Reservoir Geophysics: data acquisition, processing and interpretation in mature oil provinces” on 3-D seismology, Time-lapse seismic, VSP, multi-component seismic, migration, inversion, reservoir characterization, seismic attributes extraction and statistical analysis. It will offer a forum open to geophysicists from all over the world to present advanced geophysical techniques and innovative research works.
Moreover, the SEG Beijing office also actively coordinates and provides logistical support to visiting geophysicists from around the world. Most recently, we were honored to host Lawrence M. Gochioco (2003-2004 TLE chairman), LM Gochioco & Associates Inc., during his visit to China on September 7. After the group photo was taken outside the BGP guest hotel, Gochioco was given a tour of BGP’s research facility and data processing center.
